KARACHI: The invitation asking Muttahaida Quami Movement (MQM) to attend the federal cabinet’s special meeting to discuss the law and order situation in Karachi has been withdrawn.

The decision to withdraw the invitiation comes on the same day as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Karachi on a two-day visit during which he will review measures to improve law and order situation in the economic hub of Pakistan.

Wasay Jalil, the MQM spokesman, has confirmed that the invitation to attend Wednesday’s meeting to discuss the law and order situation in the city had been withdrawn.

The MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar had been invited to attend a high-level meeting on directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The meeting will chalk out a strategy to curb targeted killings and other criminal activities in the city.

It was expected that the federal cabinet would hear the stance of the MQM seeking the deployment of army in Karachi.
