MQM gets funds and training from India, claims BBC report

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has been receiving funding from India, according to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In its report published on Wednesday, the BBC claimed that the MQM officials told the UK authorities that they received Indian government funds.

“British authorities held formal recorded interviews with senior MQM officials who told them the party was receiving Indian funding, the BBC was told.”

The report said that British officials, who are investigating the MQM for alleged money laundering, also recovered a list of weapons from the party office when they conducted a raid there in June 2013.

The BBC report citing a Pakistani official said that India has trained hundreds of MQM militants in explosives, weapons and sabotage over the last 10 years in camps in north and northeast India.

“Before 2005-2006 the training was given to a small number of mid-ranking members of the MQM, the official said.” “More recently greater numbers of more junior party members have been trained,” according to the report.

It further said that many questions regarding these allegations were sent to MQM but the political party did not reply.

However, the MQM Coordination Committee Member Wasay Jalil has rejected the BBC’s allegations, saying they have been facing such allegations since 1992.

The report said that the Indian authorities described the claims as “completely baseless” while the MQM declined to comment on it.
