Maulana Sami says TTP shura ready for direct talks with govt committee

PESHAWAR: The Chief of the Taliban negotiation committee and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Sami (JUI-S) leader Maulana Samiul Haq has said that the Taliban Shura is ready for direct negotiations with the government committee.

The JUI-S leader made these remarks while addressing a news conference at Akora Khattak on Friday evening on return of the Taliban committee members following meeting with political shura of the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in North Waziristan.

Maulana Sami said the Taliban committee will meet the government committee tomorrow or day after to sort out details of direct negotiations including venue and date for the talks. He expressed satisfaction over progress so far made and hoped that peace efforts would ultimately succeed.

Earlier‚ a delegation of the Taliban negotiating committee returned to Nowshera after meeting the political shura of TTP in North Waziristan. The delegation briefed head of the committee Maulana Samiul Haq in Akora Khattak about their discussion with the Taliban.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Professor Muhammad Ibrahim told media representatives at Akora Khattak that their meeting with the political shura of the TTP was positive.

Professor Ibrahim said that government committee would be taken to North Waziristan for direct talks with the TTP shura, adding that the Taliban nominated team will also be on the occasion.

During the meeting, the Taliban would present their demands before the government negotiating team, he added.
