Maria Golovnina death case: Investigative Report by Dispatch News Desk

Islamabad, Pakistan: Developments in the case of death of Russian journalist Maria Golovnina are yet to be shared with media and it looks process of investigation is slow.

The real reason of asphyxiation that caused her death is still unknown despite of her body parts were sent for further forensic investigation on February 26.

She was a Russian national and her body was sent to Japan after her death. Her autopsy report that was shared with media indicated her death due to asphyxiation but the cause of asphyxiation process was not determined by doctors and only circumstantial investigation could lead to real cause of asphyxiation.

It may be mentioned that 34 year Maria Golovnina was moved to a private hospital on February 23 from her office of a news agency. She was reportedly found unconscious inside washroom. The real cause of death of young Maria who was an investigative reporter herself can only be uncovered once final forensic reports of different body parts are shared with media.

The news of her death spread in Islamabad after her body was shifted to Kulsum Hospital. She was 34 year old and Hospital sources claim that no history of medical illness was indicated by people accompanying her to hospital to doctors on duty. However, her family has yet to be contacted by media to get viewpoint about her health situation.

Her news agency in message released after her death did not indicate any reason/cause of her death and released following statement:

“We are saddened to announce that Maria Golovnina, Reuters Bureau Chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan, passed away on Monday. She was 34. Maria fell unconscious in the Islamabad bureau. An ambulance arrived quickly and she was rushed to Kulsum International Hospital, but medical teams were unable to save her”.

Statement indicated that she was alive when she was moved to Kulsum Hospital while sources in Kulsum hospital claimed that Maria was already dead and Hospital received her dead body instead of living Maria in critical condition. PIMS and Police sources claimed that her body was soaked in her vomits.

Autopsy report of Maria indicated her death by asphyxiation. The reason of asphyxiation was not determined in the report. Asphyxia or asphyxiation is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from abnormal breathing. An example of asphyxia is choking. There are many circumstances that can induce asphyxia, all of which are characterized by an inability of an individual to acquire sufficient oxygen through breathing for an extended period of time. Asphyxia can cause coma or death.

Maria joined Reuter’s news agency in Tokyo in 2001. She served in London, Singapore, Moscow, Afghanistan, Iraq and now was in Pakistan. She was elevated as AfPak Bureau Chief in 2013.

Her father is also a journalist and currently serving as, correspondent for Russian news agency TASS Vasily Golovnin, according to the Russian embassy Islamabad.
