Kyrgyzstan holds Presidential Election on October 15 with nine candidates in run

Report by Zahra Otovbek for Dispatch News Desk

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan: As many as nine contestants will run for vote in early Presidential election of Kyrgyzstan to be held on October 15, 2017.

Current (incumbent) President Almazbek Atambayev will not run for votes because Constitution does not allow anybody to rule Presidential Office more than six years. It may be mentioned that President Atambayev won Presidential Elections in 2011 for si year term by defeating Adakhan Madumarov from the Butun Kyrgyzstan Party and Kamchybek Tashiev from the Ata-Zhurt Party.

Nomination papers of Turat Akimov of Chon Kazat Party and Akun Tursunbek of Human Rights Party were rejected by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

Two former prime ministers are contesting elections this October as Temir Sariev is candidate from Akshumkar (White Falcon) Party and Sooronbay Jeenbekov, is nominated by the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan.

Other candidates include Temirbek Asanbekov, (nominated by Meken Yntymagy –Homeland Accord), Kanatbek Isaev, (Kyrgyzstan Party),  Akhmatbek Keldibekov (Respublika–Ata Zhurt–Republic-Homeland), Adakhan Madumarov (Butun Kyrgyzstan), Iskhak Masaliev (Party of Communists of Kyrgyzstan), Kamchybek Tashiev(Respublika–Ata Zhurt), and Bakyt Torobayev, (Onuguu–Progress) Party.

It is pertinent to mention that Presidential election was originally scheduled for November 2017 but President Atambayev ordered to hold early elections on the demand of the opposition.

According to the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan (amended in year 2010), the presidential term is six years but sitting President is barred for contesting next elections.

Kyrgyz political system is quite interesting where candidate for Presidential election must pass written examination for certifying above-average ability in the Kyrgyz language and candidate has to get (collection of Signatures rule) 30,000 signatures of registered voters for qualifying for submission of his or her nomination papers.

An independent candidate having no political party can also contest Presidential Election in Kyrgyzstan.
