ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A few days after Imran Khan sought resignation of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials in light of the findings of the Judicial Commission report, the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has also backed his demand.
Talking to media representatives in Islamabad on Tuesday, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader said that the ECP officials should tender their resignations after the Judicial Commission formed to investigate alleged rigging in 2013 polls exposed the Commission’s failure in carrying out elections transparently and without errors.
Shah said that the Judicial Commission in its report cast serious doubts on the ECP’s performance following which its members should resign on their own.
“ECP officials should have packed their bags and gone home after the JC report,” the opposition leader said.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday had also sought the resignation of the ECP, saying that there was no place for the ECP that conducted the 2013 election after this Judicial Commission report.
“There is no place for the election commission of Pakistan in the system anymore after the Judicial Commission highlights their absolute failure,” Imran Khan said in a press conference in Islamabad.
However, according to sources, the ECP has said that none of its members will resign as demanded by Imran Khan following the Judicial Commission report. The ECP is of the view that 2013 general elections were more fair and transparent as compared to previous polls.
