PakistanKarachi operation's gains not let to be reversed: PM Nawaz

KARACHI, Pakistan: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Monday said the gains made due to the sacrifices of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) during the Karachi operation with complete ownership of federal and provincial governments would not be allowed to be reversed under any circumstances.

Chairing a high level meeting here at the Governor House to review the ongoing operation in the mega city, and overall law and order situation in the province, the Prime Minister said the Sindh government and its chief minister would be the biggest beneficiaries of the operation, said a PM House press release.

He said the Karachi operation was started as a result of across the board institutional and political consensus.

“The sole objectives of this operation were to bring peace, stability and progress back to Karachi and to rescue the people of the city from the clutches of criminal and terrorist mafias, who had made the city hostage for a long time,” he remarked.

He said the operation reflected the will and desire of the people of Pakistan at large, all of whom wanted the city to regain its lost glory and return to the path of progress and prosperity.

The federal and provincial governments as well as the law enforcement agencies were fully cognizant of the evolving challenges and would work jointly to solidify the gains made so far, he added.

The Prime Minister highlighted the threat posed by recent spike in targeted killings of personnel of LEAs and stressed the need of evolving a comprehensive strategy to confront future challenges.

He said there was need to move away from the routine briefings on number of arrests and acquittals and formulate a strategic way forward which could ensure long term peace and stability for the city.

Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif assured the participants of the unflinching resolve and commitment of LEAs to root out terrorism and organized crime from the city.

The meeting was attended by Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, DG ISI, Corps Commander Karachi and other high ranking civil and military officials of federal and provincial governments and LEAs.

Corps Commander Karachi, Chief Secretary Sindh, DG Rangers and IGP Sindh briefed the meeting regarding the current status and challenges faced by the operation and the way forward.
