PakistanKarachi operation not be made controversial: Nisar

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday said that Rangers operation in Karachi should not be made controversial for the sake of personal interests of a single person. The operation, he said, was launched against criminals and terrorists by taking all political parties and stakeholders on board.

“This was not initiated on the behest of any particular party,” he added.

Addressing a press conference here, Chaudhary Nisar said the operation should not be made controversial on political grounds. Rangers were well-trained and professional force and any criticism on them would be not tolerated, he added.

The Interior Minister said only terrorists and criminals would take benefit if the Rangers’ powers were made controversial. They were given the mandate to purge the mega city of criminals by all the political parties, and they were rendering sacrifices for its peace and prosperity.

The people of Karachi, particularly the business community, he said, were satisfied over the success of the operation, and they wanted it to continue till its logical conclusion, he added.

Even the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), he added, despite its reservations was in favour of the operation. Delay in taking a decision by the Sindh government on the Karachi’ operation would only demoralize the Rangers’ personnel and embolden only criminals.

The Interior Minister said if no decision was taken to extend the Rangers’ mandate to continue the operation, he would put forward various options before Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for the purpose.

Political maturity demanded that all parties should shun their differences and extend full support to law enforcement agencies for peace in the Sindh metropolis, he added.
