KARACHI, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the Karachi operation which was launched in September 2013 against terrorists and criminals after a broad consensus has yielded positive results.

While presiding over a meeting on law and order in Karachi on Thursday, he said that law and order situation in Karachi has considerably improved in consequence of the ongoing operation in the city.

The prime minister said that the frequency of incidents of target killing, kidnapping for ransom and extortion have decreased manifold in the city.

Sharif lauded the performance the law-enforcement agencies, and said that police, Rangers and other institutions are playing important role in addressing the security challenge.

Nawaz Sharif categorically stated that the Karachi operation is not any particular party but is targeting criminals and terrorists.

The premier said that terrorists are on the run and they are carrying out sporadic acts just to make their presence felt.

“We will have to face them squarely,” he said.

Nawaz inaugurates K-2 power plant at KANUPP

Earlier after the prime minister reached Karachi for a day-long visit, he inaugurated the K-2 power project at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP).

The K-2 power plant is the largest in the country and it will generate 1,100MW electricity upon completion.

In his address on the occasion, the prime minister said that overcoming energy crisis and elimination of terrorism are the foremost priorities of the present government.

The prime minister said that the cooperation in the establishment of K-2 and K-3 nuclear power projects reflect strong bonds between Pakistan and China. He also appreciated the Chinese cooperation in the nuclear power sector.

Moreover, Sharif also appreciated the steps being taken by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for the safety of existing and under construction nuclear power plants.

Commander AFCENT appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in promoting regional peace and vowed to enhance cooperation in the fields of joint training, mutual exercises and military to military collaboration. In a separate meeting, Chief of the Air Staff also called on Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.
