ISI Chief, Afghan president discuss ways to boost anti-terror coordination

KABUL, Afghanistan: The Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar held a meeting with the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai in Kabul.

In a statement on Monday, the Afghan president’s spokesman Nazifullah Salarzai said that the two sides discussed ways to boost coordination in fighting militant attacks in the region during the meeting on Sunday.

“In this meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen joint efforts against terrorism and extremism,” the spokesman said.

The two sides agreed to coordinate against militant groups that fight against each government and exploit the porous border to flee military crackdowns.

The current Afghan president paid an official visit to Pakistan soon after he took the charge of new office on September 29 last year as a part of efforts to reset bilateral relations with Pakistan as the ties between the two neighboring countries were particularly strained under Hamid Karzai’s 13-year rule in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, in an interview with a private television channel, the prime minister’s adviser on national security and foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz admitted that the Indian involvement in carrying out attacks on Pakistan has decreased since the adoption of a joint Pak-Afghan policy to not to let their soils be used against each other.

“There has been a paradigm shift in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s policies, and it has been decided to monitor the movement of extremists along the border and stop their activities,” the adviser said.
