LAHORE, Pakistan: Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar Saturday stressed the need for formulating and implementing a ‘Charter of Economy’ to develop Pakistan speedily at all levels.

He was addressing a seminar on “The Role of Islamic Banking in Economic Development of Pakistan” organized by Jang Group here at Royal Palm Country Club.

Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra, SBP Deputy Governor Saeed Ahmad and banking sector’s leaders were also present.

Ishaq Dar said the PML-N government was committed to do away with the three major challenges of economic revival, energy crisis and elimination of terrorism from the country, adding, “We have almost grasped all these major challenges by ensure remarkable achievements in these directions.”

The Minister, however, called upon all the stake-holders of economy- the banks, businessmen, industrialists and other financial institutions to play their due and effective role through their contributions in the economic development process of the country.

Senator Ishaq Dar said the PML-N government had always kept the promotion of Islamic banking and financing on priority and today, Islamic Banking (IB) had the share of 13.1 percent in deposits and 11.2 percent in lending in the overall banking sector of the country.

The government had also been incorporated the suggestions of Islamic banking leaders into the budget since its coming into power.

After global recession of 2007-08 in which billions of dollars institutions went into bankruptcy and a few hundred others were eroded, he said, now there was a great awareness and realization in the world about Islamic banking that was on the rise in the world. The West, he added, was adopting this system on commercial gains basis and “Being a Muslim we should adopt it according to our religion and constitution.”

When Islamic financial sector would get development, you would gain increased risk-free resources which would be of great importance in physical capital formation and economic growth, he maintained.

“The Islamic Banking will take you to real economic activity; protect you from speculations; link your risk to your returns, ensure formation of your wealth, and this system will also result in equal distribution of income,” he added.

The government, he said, wanted to switch over the country’s economy from conventional to Islamic mode as early as possible.

The Minister said, “This is my standing directive to Ministry of Finance to must prefer Islamic banking in any public sector borrowing.”

He mentioned that N-League government had always put the country’s economy on track to speedy growth, adding that in 2011-12, Pakistan economy was declared instable and no country was then ready to buy Pak bonds, but today Pakistan’s bonds including Sukuk got unprecedented response at global level. Because in only two years, the PML-N government managed to stabilize Pakistan economy to that level, as today 22 credible institutions of the world had declared Pak economy much stable, he added.

The Minister said that PML-N government managed to bring down the budget deficit to 5.3 percent from 8.8 percent and would soon lower it further up to 2.4 percent.

“We have curtailed the discretionary funds of the Prime Minister and the ministers and I also challenge that there was not any non-transparent transaction at high level,” he added.

Ishaq Dar said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had the vision and plan to take Pakistan forward on all fronts and PML-N government did not plan up to its tenure but make long-term policies and planning with all sincerity to bring the country at par with developed nations.

Mushaal Malik seeks global community intervention to end Indian oppression in IIOJK ISLAMABAD: Mushaal Hussein Mullick, wife of an unlawfully incarcerated senior Hurriyat Leader Mohammad Yasin Malik, stated that the supremacist Indian occupation authorities had been committing war crimes and violating international human rights with impunity in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) since October 27, 1947 to perpetuate its illegitimate occupation on Kashmir. Speaking at a Kashmir solidarity rally taken out in Islamabad to mark Kashmir Black Day, she said that the people of Kashmir had been enduring the tyrannies of Hindutva regime during the past 77 years but these oppressions and coercive tactics could not dampen their courage. Mushaal, who is also the Chairperson of Peace and Culture Organisation, expressed serious concerns about safety and wellbeing of her jailed husband because the Indian notorious government was hell-bent to silence to most powerful voice of Kashmiri freedom struggle in a fake, fabricated and absurd case. She highlighted that the occupation authorities converted the scenic valley into a garrison city and a killing field, as even Kashmiri children could not go to school right now because parents were imprisoned for their crimes to raise voice of their right to self-determination. However, the Hurriyat leader stated that despite all these hardship and reign of terror unleashed by the brutal forces, Kashmiris remained steadfast struggling for seven decades to break the shackles of Indian slavery. Mushaal went on to say that when the people stand together, freedom can be achieved, with the people's voice, even the mightiest of tyrants can be defeated. The Hurriyat leader stated that people in the occupied valley were not even safe inside their own homes, as bodies of their leaders and loved ones were not returned to them. She highlighted the ordeal faced by Kashmiri leaders, saying Asiya Andrabi held in Tihar Jail, whose health deteriorated alarmingly in jail. She emphasized the importance of remembering this day annually, saying, “Every Pakistani stands in solidarity on this day.” Mushaal encouraged young Pakistanis to launch campaigns through social media, highlighting that Pakistan’s founding leader, Quaid-e-Azam, also placed trust in the power of youth. “You can become our powerful voice today,” she stated, urging them to remain steadfast for Kashmir. Mushaal recalled that India had resettled millions of Indian nationals in the region unlawfully to alter its demographic makeup, aiming to turn it into what she termed a mini-India. She called upon the international community to hold India accountable for its excesses in IIOJK and to support the Kashmiri people's struggle for their inalienable right to self-determination. Mushaal vowed that the people of Kashmir have endured decades of oppression, but their resolve remains unbroken. However, she urged the international community and human rights organizations to shun the double-standard and take note of Indian worst human rights violations so as to resolve the Kashmir dispute once for all in accordance to the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.
