WorldIranian parliament approves nuclear deal with world powers

TEHRAN, Iran: The Iranian parliament on Tuesday approved the nuclear deal reached in July with world powers, removing an obstacle for the President Hassan Rouhani’s government to implement the agreement.

In July this year, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with six world powers in Vienna to settle a decade-old dispute over its nuclear program.

A total of 250 lawmakers were present in the Parliament when the voting began today. Out of which, 161 members voted in favour of the JCPOA, 59 disapproved while 13 did not vote either way.

“Members of parliament made a well-considered decision today showing they have a good understanding of the country’s situation,” the government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht was quoted as saying by Reuters in a televised news conference after the vote.

However, the JCPOA bill says that inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) need to take approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) for visiting military sites.

It also say that the Islamic Republic should resume its nuclear activities if international sanctions are not lifted as agreed under the JCPOA.

Iran and six world powers including the US, UK, Russia, China, France, and Germany reached a comprehensive nuclear agreement on July 14, under which Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from the sanctions.
