India as UNSC permanent member not acceptable to Pakistan, Nawaz tells Obama

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has told the US President Barack Obama that it won’t be acceptable to Pakistan if India gets permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

In a telephonic conversation held with the US president last night, Sharif said that India as a permanent member of the UNSC not acceptable at all because it has not fulfilled any resolution passed by the UN aimed at assuring the right of self-determination for the people of Kashmir.

“India is by no means eligible to become a permanent member of UN,” the prime minister was quoted as saying by the PM House spokesman.

The spokesman said that the prime minister also conveyed Pakistan’s desire to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

Meanwhile, the White House said in a statement that during the telephonic conversation with Nawaz Sharif, Obama discussed bilateral and regional issues.

“The two leaders agreed to continue to work together to strengthen U.S.-Pakistan relations and advance our shared interest of a stable, secure, and prosperous Pakistan and region,” the White House said.

The US president also discussed his recent visit to India, and noted the United States supports all efforts by both nations to improve ties.

Obama welcomed the improved relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and noted appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism.

“Both leaders expressed the intent to meet at a mutually convenient time,” the statement said.
