Imran sets January 18 deadline for govt to form judicial commission

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday set January 18 as the deadline for the federal government to form a judicial commission to probe the alleged rigging in 2013 general elections.

In a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday, Imran Khan said that the PTI does not want to take to the streets but if the government fails to form judicial commission by January 18, it will do so.

“We can shut the entire country whenever we want, but we do not want this,” Imran Khan said.

Imran Khan said that his party’s future course of action will be announced later.

“Free and fair democracy is as big issue as curbing terrorism in the country,” the PTI chief said.

The PTI chief further said that they showed flexibility in a greater national interest, and favored the 21st Constitutional amendment in spite of opposition.

Earlier in the day, the 342-member National Assembly passed the 21st Constitution amendment for the trial of terrorists through special courts headed by army officers with two-thirds majority.

A total of 247 members of the House cast their votes in favour of the bill while none against it.

The Members of the PTI, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) did not attend the proceedings of the House.
