ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Friday that Gwadar could be given a special status like Hong Kong to attract foreign investment and boost national economy as it had a potential like Dubai and Singapore.

He was chairing a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office to discuss the Gwadar-Kashghar economic corridor that would open up new areas for economic activity and generate employment.

The Premier said there would be several advantages of declaring Gwadar a free port.

“The location of Gwadar is strategic and there is full potential of it to become a free port. It is my opinion to give Gwadar special status and special rules and regulations can be formulated,” he said.

The prime minister also informed the meeting that China had shown interest in establishing an underground railway network in Karachi and Lahore.

Moreover, he also approved in principal upgradation of the existing railway track system between Karachi and Peshawar at a cost of US 2.7 billion dollars.

Referring to security situation in Pakistan, the premier said that menace of extremism and terrorism should be eliminated to bring the country back on the path of peace and progress.
