Govt terms Imran’s demand for inclusion of ISI, MI in judicial commission unconstitutional

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal minister for planning and development Ahsan Iqbal has termed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s demand for inclusion of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) officials in the Judicial Commission to investigate rigging in the 2013 elections as illogical and unconstitutional.

The PTI Chairman while addressing a large public gathering in Rahim Yar Khan on Sunday evening said that members of the ISI and MI should sit on a commission headed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to probe electoral rigging allegations.

Talking to media, the minister said that the demand for Judicial Commission has already been accepted by the government but the inclusion of officials of ISI and MI is beyond understanding.

The minister said the Judicial Commission should only comprise judges of the Supreme Court. He asked Imran Khan to come to the negotiating table to sort out matters with the government and also take part in the proceedings of electoral reforms committee.

The PTI leader in his address in Rahim Yar Khan further said that that general elections held in May last year were not conducted in a free and fair manner. He said that that the government should set up the commission to investigate alleged poll rigging by November 30.

Imran Khan said that the commission which will also include officials of the ISI and MI should take six weeks to conduct its investigation and until then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should not resign.

“If the commission gives the decision that rigging took place, Nawaz Sharif has to hand in his resignation,” Imran Khan said.
