ISLAMABAD: The minimum wage of the federal government employees has been raised up to Rs 10‚000 per month, Finance Minister Ishaque Dar announced on Friday.

The finance minister said while winding up debate on new budget in the Senate on Friday that reducing fiscal deficit is a big challenge for the government but hoped it would succeed in achieving the goal.

Dar said that the government fully respects the verdict of the Supreme Court on imposing additional GST.

However‚ the finance minister said that in his personnel opinion enhancing GST was not illegal. He urged the parliament to make legislation to abolish 1931 act.

Ishaque Dar said the government is determined to take all decisions in the parliament.

The finance minister said that there will be no additional tax imposed on salary persons drawing 2.5 million rupees annually. He said that we have taken strict decisions to correct the direction of our economy.

Meanwhile, the Senate unanimously approved the budgetary recommendations on the Finance Bill‚ 2013 containing the Annual Budget Statement.

The Senate resumed its session in Islamabad on Friday with Chairman Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari in the chair.

Standing Committee on Finance Chairperson Nasreen Jalil laid before the House the report of the committee on the proposals for making recommendations on the finance bill.

Two reports were presented before the House today.

Chairman‚ Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control Muhammad Talha Mahmood presented the report of the Committee on the inordinate delay in issuance of Passports by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports‚ Islamabad. While Standing Committee on Industries and Production Chairman laid the report of the Committee for the period from March 2012 to March 2013.
