Four Senators elected from FATA

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Four Senators including Sajjad Toori, Haji Momin Khan Afridi, Taj Muhammad Afridi and Aurangzeb Khan were elected on the reserved seats from the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) on Friday.

A total of 36 candidates contested for four FATA seats in the elections held at the Parliament House in Islamabad.

In the polls, seven out of eleven members of the National Assembly from FATA cast their votes while four of them boycotted the election process.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials said that Taj Muhammad Afridi and Aurangzeb Khan received seven votes each while Sajjad Toori and Haji Momin Khan Afridi secured six votes each.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif congratulated the newly elected Senators from FATA.

In a statement, he hoped that they will play their role for strengthening democratic institutions in the country.

The polling for FATA was scheduled on March 5; however, later it was postponed due to the confusion with regards to the presidential ordinance issued hours before the Senate elections.
