Four-member new govt committee formed for Taliban talks

ISLAMABAD: A four-member new peace committee led by Secretary Ports and Shipping Habibullah Khattak has been constituted by the federal government to hold talks with the Taliban, the sources said on Wednesday.

The sources said that the new committee includes Habibullah Khattak, Rustam Shah Mohmand, who was also the part of the previous government committee, the additional secretary FATA Arbab Arif and the prime minister’s additional secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan at his residence in Islamabad, during which they agreed to continue the dialogue process with the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The sources said that the prime minister took the PTI chairman into confidence on national security issues including peace talks with the TTP.

During the meeting, the sources said, the formation of a new committee of government negotiators and a strategy in case of failure of peace talks was discussed.
