Government of PakistanFederal govt to respect Supreme Court decision regarding Panama Papers: Asif

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the government will fully respect the decision of the Supreme Court regarding investigation into the Panama Papers.

Talking to the media persons outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad on Tuesday, he said the apex court during the hearing of Panama Papers petitions, “gave a loud and lucid message that it wants probe into the controversy. Whatever course of action it now takes even if it constitutes the commission, we will accept it.”

The defense minister reminded that the government had prayed the apex court six months ago about the formation of the commission for investigation into the matter. Therefore establishment of the commission will be endorsement of the government’s point of view.

Khawaja Asif said as the issue of Panama papers is before the court, there is no justification for the street protest.

The Defense Minister said after the formation of the commission, the government will also present details of the offshore companies owned by our opponents.

Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the government and other parties to present their Terms of References (TORs) for formation of commission on Panama Papers on the next hearing (Thursday).

During the hearing of petitions on Panama Papers, the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf (PTI) expressed their consent for the formation of the commission. The court asked the parties to present in writing their proposal for formation of the commission.
