By-election in Sheikhupura’s PP-162 underway

SHEIKHUPURA, Pakistan: The by-election in PP-162 Sheikhupura constituency went underway on Thursday.

The polling began at 8 am and will be continued till 5 pm.

The seat had fallen vacant on account of the death of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker in Punjab assembly Muhammad Khuram Gulfam on July 22.

There are 137,000 registered voters who are casting their votes in 176 polling stations established in the constituency by the election commission.

The ruling PML-N had awarded the ticket to the late MPA’s nephew Ehsan Riaz while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had reposed trust in Usman Nisar Pannu.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and some religio-political parties are supporting Pannu. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) did not field any candidate as its central committee had announced a boycott of the polls.

An Independent candidate Chaudhry Manzoor is also standing in the by-election.
