Election rigging probe: Federal govt dismisses Imran’s demand

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal government has dismissed a demand made by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for inclusion of security agencies officials in the judicial commission to probe the alleged rigging in the 2013 elections.

In a press conference in Islamabad on Monday, the federal finance minister Ishaq Dar said that officials of security agencies cannot be included in the judicial commission to investigate rigging in general elections held in May last year.

The finance minister said that as per the Constitution, a judicial commission only comprises judges and the government will not do anything in violation of the Constitution.

Ishaq Dar said that nominating members of a judicial commission is the prerogative of the chief justice, adding that even the government cannot propose the names.

The minister for information Pervaiz Rasheed and the minister for science and technology Zahid Hamid were also present on the occasion.

On Sunday evening, addressing a large public gathering in Rahim Yar Khan, Imran Khan demanded a judicial commission but also including officials of the inter-services intelligence and military intelligence to probe electoral rigging allegations within six weeks.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
