ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Additional Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan Fida Muhammad Khan Monday said ECP has introduced android technology in local government elections to collect results from Returning Officers (ROs) to ensure efficiency and transparency.

Talking to media here, he said that 200 polling stations, out of 640, had been selected to use the technology on experimental basis.

If the process is succeeded, he said, the android technology system would be introduced in the next general elections to be held in 2018.

In the past, he said, there had been reservations of political parties about the result-compiling process, adding “The system introduced by the ECP will help remove reservations of the parties in future”.

He said ECP had provided smart phones to Presiding and Returning Officers so that they could capture photographs of the results and send to ECP, which would appear on its official website automatically.

“The software has been prepared by the ECP IT department,” Fida added.

To a question he said the elections results would be compiled through both manual procedure and android technology simultaneously.

To another question, he said the local government election in the city were held in overall peaceful atmosphere.

However, some complaints of minor nature had been received which were resolved immediately by the ECP.

The Additional Secretary urged all the political parties to observe the code of conduct issued by the ECP after the preliminary results were announced.

“Following the code of conduct is the equal responsibility of all stakeholders including political parties,” he remarked.
