PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The death toll of the powerful earthquake that wracked havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has mounted to 220 whereas 1656 persons sustained injuries besides damage to 10586 houses and 147 schools as the Federal and Provincial Government has expedited relief efforts in the affected districts.
According to PDMA Spokesman, the most deaths were reported from Shangla where 49 people lost their lives due to walls and roof collapsed incidents due to October 26 earthquake. The killer earthquake claimed 34 lives in Swat, 32 in Chitral, 24 in Dir Lower, 20 in Torghar, 17 in Dir Upper, 11 in Kohistan Upper, 9 in Buner, 4 in Peshawar, three in Charsadda, three in Mardan, three in Kohistan lower, two in Nowshera, two in Swabi, two in Malakand, two in Manshera, one in Abbottabad, one in Batagram and one in Hangu.
A total of 1656 injured were reported so far from KP districts include 158 in Dir Upper, 248 in Dir Lower, 228 in Shangla, 200 in Chitral, 199 in Swat, 165 in Peshawar, 101 in Mardan, 98 in Buner, 85 in Abbottabad, 78 in Malakand, 21 in Kohat, 19 in Swabi, 18 in Torghar, 15 in Batagram, 14 in Nowshera, four in Manshera, three in Kohistan lower, one in Bannu and one in Charasadda.
The Spokesman said around 1550 injured people were referred to different hospitals out of which 210 are admitted while rest of the people have been discharged after giving First Aid Treatment.
As many as 10586 houses was damaged by the powerful earthquake include 931 in Shangla, 1486 in Chitral, 3681 in Swat, 2397 in Dir Lower, 560 in Dir Upper, 250 in Torghar, one in Kohistan upper, 405 in Bunner, 792 in Malakand, 25 in Kohistan lower, five in Tank, four in Abbottabad, 13 in Batagram, 19 in Lakki Marwat and 17 in Haripure.
The earthquake also not spare educational infrastructure as 147 schools including 45 in Dir Upper, 53 in Tank, 34 in Lakki Marwat and 15 in Bannu were either damaged or destroyed.
The PDMA has dispatched 1000 food packages to district Chitral for the affectees of the earthquake. Moreover, the non-food items (NFIs) including tents, blankets, and floor mates are also being dispatched to different districts of Malakand Division, the spokesman added.
The Spokesman said all Deputy Commissioners are authorized to utilize relief fund for rescue and relief activities including the provision of food/non-food items. In addition to above mentioned relief items, total 2000 tents, 4000 food packages and 10,000 blankets have been placed at the disposal of Commissioner Malakand Division for further distribution to districts on need basis.
All DHOs are directed to visit respective health facilities in their districts and to ensure availability of staff and necessary medicines and equipments.
He said seven teams were constituted to visit to affected areas to perform rapid need assessment and to supervise the relief activities. Control room of PDMA is operational round the clock and information about earthquake is being shared with masses.
