North AmericaDrone strikes ‘clear violation of our sovereignty’; Pakistan's envoy to US

WASHINGTON: CIA drone strikes in Pakistan are “a clear violation of our sovereignty and a violation of international law” that threaten stable relations between Islamabad and Washington, Pakistan’s envoy to US said.

According to US newspaper The Washington Post, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman said Tuesday that US drone strikes in Pakistan are illegal and counterproductive, producing more militants than they eliminate.

Sherry called the targeted killings a “direct violation of our sovereignty” and international law as well as a red line that Pakistani authorities are constantly urging the US not to cross.

Ambassador said that her country has done all it can to eradicate terrorists and their havens, adding that more strikes by the US Central Intelligence Agency’s remotely piloted planes may hamper security cooperation.

The newspaper quoted Sherry Rehman as saying that persistent reports that Pakistan has tacitly approved the strikes while publicly denouncing them are untrue.
