Bangladesh hangs Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah for 1971 war crimes

DHAKA: Abdul Kader Mullah, a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, has been hanged in Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday for war crimes during the country’s 1971 independence war.

Earlier in the day, the Bangladesh’s top court headed by Chief Justice Muzammel Hussain had dismissed the appeal of Abdul Kader Mullah for a final review and upheld his death sentence.

On Tuesday night, Abdul Kader Mullah had got a stay of his execution hours before he was due to be executed at a jail in Dhaka on the grounds of alleged war crimes during the 1971 war.

The 65-year-old Abdul Kader Mullah was convicted in February of crimes against humanity during the country’s 1971 war. However, he denied all the charges.

Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan has announced to hold countrywide protest tomorrow against the execution of JI senior leader in Bangladesh.

In a statement, the JI Ameer Syed Munawar Hassan strongly condemned the execution of Abdul Kader Mullah, saying these oppressive tactics will not detract the JI from the path of Islam.
