KABUL: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border on Wednesday that left at least nine people dead and more than 100 injured, officials said.
The epicenter of the quake was 15 miles west-northwest of Jalalabad and 59 miles east of Kabul, the US Geological Survey reported.
According to Ahmadzia Abdullzai, spokesman for Nangarhar provincial governor, children were among the casualties and he cited widespread structural damage.
