Afghan presidential elections 2014: No candidates secures 50% votes, elections goes to run-off

KABUL: The Afghan election commission on Saturday announced preliminary results of presidential elections held across the country on April 5, according to which no candidate could win more than 50 percent of the votes, now a run-off will be held between the two leading candidates on May 28.

The results were announced by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) head Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani on Saturday, which say that former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah is in the lead with 44.9 per cent of the votes, closely followed by former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani with 31.5 per cent.

Zalmai Rassoul, candidate rumoured to be favoured by incumbent Afghan President Hamid Karzai, managed to secure 11.5 per cent and former warlord Abdul Rasul Sayyaf with 7.1 per cent.
