37 journalists killed in Pakistan in five years: Senate told

ISLAMABAD: As many as 37 journalists were killed in the past five years, out of which 17 lost their lives in Sindh, six in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, eight in Balochistan, five in the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), and one in Islamabad.

This was told by the state minister for internal affair Baleegh-ur-Rehman in a written statement submitted in Senate on Friday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Reporters without Borders (RSF) in its annual report described Pakistan as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.

In its report, the France-based media watchdog said that seven reporters lost their lives in the line of duty in 2013 in Pakistan.

The state minister further said that 1,257 people went missing in the last five years. He said that in the last five years 3,099 people were kidnapped, while 1,623 rapes and 11,21,034 robberies took place across the country.

The Senate was informed that 547 convicts were hanged to death in the country, 63 on charges of terrorism and 484 for murder, but no execution took place during the last five years.
