35 held for attacking death anniversary event of Salman Taseer

LAHORE, Pakistan: Police have arrested 35 suspects for creating public disorder at a vigil held in Lahore on Sunday to mark the death anniversary of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer.

On Sunday, the members of civil society gathered at the Liberty Chowk in Lahore to light candles in memory the slain politician; however, some unknown enraged people attacked the participants.

The attackers tore apart banners and posters of Salman Taseer and also beaten up some civil society members before they fled the scene.

Meanwhile, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered on Monday against seven unknown persons in the Gulberg police station for attacking the vigil on the complaint of members of civil society.

The Punjab government spokesman said that cases have been registered against the suspects. He said that the government is committed to ensuring peace and stability.

On the other hand, police sources claimed that most of those arrested in relation to the attack belong to a banned organization.

The former Punjab governor was shot and killed by his own guard Mumtaz Qadri in broad day light in December 2011 in Islamabad.
