2013 poll rigging: Judicial commission to hold first public hearing on April 16

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The first public hearing by the Judicial Commission formed to investigate alleged rigging in May 2013 general elections will be held on April 16.

The hearing will be held at 01:00 pm in Court Room No 1 of the Supreme Court in Islamabad.

Earlier, the general elections inquiry commission headed by the Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk and comprising Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan held its first meeting at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad on Thursday.

In the meeting, the commission invited proposals from the political parties, who participated in the 2013 general elections, to submit supporting material or evidence for its consideration to determine whether elections were organized and conducted impartially, honestly, fairly, justly and in accordance with law.

The commission said that proposals should be in the form of brief statement accompanied by supporting evidence or material to be submitted to the Secretary to the commission by April 15.

It said that any person or a counsel appearing on behalf of a political party would produce due authorization from the head of the party.

The Secretary to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Muhammad Hamid Ali has been appointed as the Secretary to the Inquiry Commission.

The commission was formed after President Mamnoon Hussain on April 3 issued an ordinance for setting up a judicial commission on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif following an agreement between the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for a judicial commission that will investigate allegations of rigging in 2013 general elections.
