TUNIS, Tunisia: At least 19 persons including 17 foreign tourists and a policeman were killed in an attack at the Bardo Museum in Central Tunis on Wednesday.

The Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid confirmed the casualties and said that a hostage situation also ended after the security forces killed two armed militants who had attacked the museum with Kalashnikovs.

Essid said that those foreign tourists killed in the attack belonged to Italy, Germany, Poland and Spain.

In addition, 24 other persons including 22 foreign tourists also sustained injuries in the militant attack carried out at the Bardo museum, located next to the Parliament building, the prime minister said.

Meanwhile, the Parliament building has been evacuated as a precaution.

“It is a critical moment in our history, and a defining moment for our future,” Habib Essid said.

“We have not established the identity of the two terrorists,” the Tunisian prime minister said adding that “Reports are not final, these two terrorists could have been assisted by two or three other operatives.”
