PESHAWAR, Pakistan: At least 106 persons, including women and children, were killed and 673 injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the devastating earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter Scale that jolted most of the country Monday afternoon.
According to a PDMA spokesman, six persons died in Peshawar, 20 in Chitral, three in Charsadda, seven in Buner, 16 in Swat, 17 in Dir Lower, 12 in Dir Upper, one in Mansehra, one in Malakand, 18 in Shangla, three in Kohistan Lower and two in Swabi, while 673 injured in incidents of roof and wall collapses.
Some 100 incidents of roof and house collapses occurred in Peshawar, 45 in Buner, 49 in Swat, 90 in Chitral, 31 in Shangla, two in Kohistan Lower, one in Charsadda, 41 in Dir Upper, 13 in Dir Lower, one in Bannu, 15 in Battagram, four in Mansehra, 19 in Swabi, 63 in Abbottabad, 21 in Kohat and 78 in Malakand districts.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the spokesman said, had directed all the district administration to utilize rescue and relief funds for the relief and rescue operations.
Emergency has been declared in all the government hospitals in the province while food and necessary items have been dispatched to the affected areas, he added.
He said all the revenue staff has been directed to make assessment of the infrastructure damage at earliest and submit initial reports to this effect to district administration and PDMA. District Health Officers have been directed to visit hospitals in their respective areas and ensure availability of medicines and medical staff besides supervising the relief operations.
Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif arrived at the Peshawar Corps Headquarter where he was briefed about the relief and rescue operations and the devastation caused by the earthquake in various parts of the province.
