Fazl calls meeting of religious political parties over military courts law

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called a consultative meeting of major religious political parties in Islamabad on Thursday.

During the meeting, the JUI-F leader will try to convince the religious leaders to unite in protest against the newly adopted 21st Constitutional Amendment, according to sources.

Maulana Fazl has reportedly contacted religious leaders including Jamiat Ahle Hadith Leader Professor Sajid Mir, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) President Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Zubair, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Sirajul Haq, and leaders of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Samiul Haq group (JUI-S) and the Tanzeem-e-Islami.

Earlier in the day, President Mamnoon Hussain signed the 21st Constitutional Amendment into law which is aimed at speedy trial of terrorists through special courts headed by military officers.

The amendment was passed unanimously through the Parliament on Tuesday. However, the JUI-F and the JI obtained from voting.

The JUI-F chief had expressed his apprehensions over the new legislation. He said that the new law was biased and could be used to target religious seminaries and institutions.

Meanwhile in a press conference in Islamabad today, the interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that action will be taken against only those Madaris which are facilitating terrorists in any way, and they are very few.

The minister said that it will be ensured that no proscribed organization resurfaces with a changed name.
