Monitoring Desk: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and first lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the tomb of the great son of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honors as May 10 marks the 97th anniversary of his birth, reports State-Run News Agency AZERTAC.
According to AZERTAC, President Ilham Aliyev and first lady Mehriban Aliyeva put flowers at the national leader Heydar Aliyev’s tomb and paid tribute to him.
The head of state and his wife then placed flowers at the grave of the national leader`s wife, outstanding ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva, as well as the tombs of prominent statesman Aziz Aliyev and renowned physician, scientist Tamerlan Aliyev.

Azerbaijan was surrounded by many threats when Heydar Aliyev took over the charge of the country, which included constant war with Armenia, absence of a national army, rule of unruly armed groups, and fragile economy. However, he had some opportunities which included geopolitical positioning of Azerbaijan, oil industry, Caspian Sea trade, and hardworking people.
He (Aliyev) concentrated on opportunities and raised the country from ashes of war by adopting an independent foreign policy which helped to showcase Azerbaijan as a land of investment for everybody on earth. The oil industry was a marketed readily available product.
The foundation of economic and social growth was laid with the Contract of the Century which got investment from top oil leading companies of the world and inflow of investment was also followed by the inflow of tourists in Azerbaijan. Now Azerbaijan is one of the strongest economies of the former Soviet Union and a hub of international tourism.
Meanwhile, the Embassy staff of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan celebrated the birthday of National Leader of the Azerbaijani people and also placed flowers at his statue in the Embassy and commemorated him on his birth anniversary.
