EuropeEU imposes sanctions on Iranian judges, media bosses

BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) on Tuesday imposed sanctions on a new group of Iranians for alleged human rights violations, the move brings the total number of Iranians facing EU sanctions including asset freezes and visa bans to 87.

The people who were subjected to sanctions include the head of Evin prison, several judges and prosecutors, and two leaders of Iran’s state-controlled Press TV.

The sanctions imposed by the 27-country bloc reflect mounting concerns about human rights in the Islamic Republic and are separate from measures against Tehran over its nuclear program, which governments in the European Union and elsewhere suspect has a covert military dimension.
