Pakistani model Ayyan sent to Jail in money laundering case

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: Pakistani supermodel and actress Ayyan Ali has been charged with money laundering, and sent to the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi for a 14-day judicial remand.

The sources said that if charges against her are proved, she may face from 7 to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The 21-year-old Ayyan was earlier on Saturday taken into custody by the customs officials at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport for attempting to carry US $500,000 abroad.

The model was set to board an Emirates airline to Dubai and according to the airport security force, she did not declare that she was carrying a large sum of money.

After her arrest, Ayyan went through a medical check-up at the District Headquarters Hospital in Rawalpindi.

Later, the customs authorities registered a case of money laundering against her and began an investigation into the incident.

Ayyan Ali started her career as a model at age of 16. She has worked with fashion designers including Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, Karma, Chinyere (Bareeze) and Gul Ahmed. She has also been the Brand Ambassador of Sunsilk, Ufone, Samsung, Honda and McDonalds.

In 2010, Ayyan was awarded the title of Calvin Klein ‘Beauty of the Year 2010’. Later she became the brand ambassador for the same brand. In the same year Ayyan was nominated for best female emerging model in Lux Style Awards. In 2011, she was one of the nominations for Best Female Model in Lux Style Awards. Ayyan has also worked for international projects.

In 2013, Ayyan became the Brand Ambassador for the Wall’s ice cream Magnum in Pakistan. The party of Magnum ice cream hold at the spacious Convention Center at the DHA Golf Club in Karachi. Ayyan won the best female model award for 2012 at Pakistan media Awards. Her music video and single called You and I was released on the occasion of Eid in July 2014 was panned by the critics.
