ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, Lok Virsa will screen Italian tragicomic comedy-drama film here on January 30.

The movie `Life Is Beautiful’ is an Italian comedy-drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, who co-wrote the film with Vincenzo Cerami. Benigni plays Guido Orefice, a Jewish Italian book shop owner, who must employ his fertile imagination to shield his son.

Part of the film came from Benigni’s own family history; before Roberto’s birth, his father had survived three years of internment at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

The film was a critical and financial success, winning Benigni the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 71st Academy Awards as well as the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Life is Beautiful was shown at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to win the Grand Prix. At the 71st Academy Awards, the film won awards for Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, and Best Foreign Language Film, with Benigni winning Best Actor for his role. The film also received Academy Award nominations for Directing, Film Editing, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture.

“The Mandwa film club of Lok Virsa is an initiative taken by the institute to revive the classical cinema in the twin cities and involve the fun lovers in healthy activities that keep alive the dying the culture and traditions among the young generation,” said Fouzia Saeed, Executive Director, Lok Virsa while talking to APP.

The Lok Virsa screen national and international classical hits on every weekend and invite audience from all walks of life to entertain them as well as engage them in cultural programmes, she said.
