Engro becomes part of global campaign on preservation of ozone layer

KARACHI: The UN General Assembly has proclaimed September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, according to a press release issued by Engro on Tuesday.

To commemorate the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, Engro organized an initiative to phase out ozone-depleting substances and to raise awareness and reiterate their commitment towards an eco-efficient world. Through this initiative and related events, Engro aims to play its role in creation of an environmentally aware society for a better and brighter tomorrow. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Ozone Layer Protection: The Mission Goes On”.

Speaking at the ceremony, Wajid Junejo – Head of Green Office Initiative at Engro said, “We as a company are passionate about ensuring that our policies and procedures are environmentally friendly. Over the years, Engro has become more environmentally conscious and aware of its surroundings. As a result of the Ozone Layer Campaign, the abundance of ozone-depleting substances in the atmosphere is declining and the ozone layer is expected to recover around the middle of this century.  We ensure that our environmental footprint continues to demonstrate our focus on the environment and our efforts to align our corporate interests with the global leaders. Today, on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2014, we pledge to remain focused on deploying a multifaceted strategy to ensure sustainability”.

Engro is an environmentally-aware and a responsible company, and has initiated various programs of action that are ecologically favorable and in connection with the development and sustainability of the environment. Green Office Initiative is one such program, aimed at reducing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions and workplace environmental footprint.

Since its inception, Engro’s Green Office Initiative has advocated a culture of environmental responsibility enabling the workforce to act in eco-efficient and conscious manner in everyday tasks, and has improved environmental awareness in cost-efficient ways.

As a result, Engro was able to reduce its electricity consumption and registered 42% conservation of electricity. Similarly, a 56% reduction in paper usage, 82% reduction in waste and 44% reduction in carbon footprint against baseline benchmarks were also witnessed.

Acknowledging Engro’s efforts, WWF-Pakistan honored Engro with Silver Award of Achievement. These awards were conferred in recognition of Engro’s substantial reduction in environmental footprint.
