Elections 2013PML-N leader Sheikh Waqas Akram declared eligible to contest election

MULTAN: Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Sheikh Waqas Akram on Wednesday was declared eligible to contest the upcoming elections from NA-89 Jhang IV constituency after an election tribunal accepted his appeal against a returning officer’s earlier decision, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.

Earlier, a returning officer had rejected Akram’s papers after his A-level certificate was declared fake. Akram was the former federal minister for education and training.

Akram will contest election against chief of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) Maulana Muhammad Ahmad Ludhianvi on the NA-89 seat.

In the 2008 general elections, Akram, who contested NA-89 on the PML-Quaid’s ticket, emerged victorious after securing 51,733 votes, while Ludhianvi secured 44,894 votes as an independent candidate.

Separately, an election tribunal disqualified Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) member Aslam Madhiana from contesting the upcoming elections from PP-31.

Madhiana’s nomination papers were earlier rejected by a returning officer and the PPP leader had appealed against the decision.
