CAIRO: Egyptian security forces have arrested the head of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie, state media reported on Tuesday.

The 70-year-old Badie, who is usually described as the Brotherhood’s spiritual leader or “General Guide,” was held at an apartment in Nasr City in the northeast of Cairo, Egyptian media said.

Both Badie and his deputy, Khairat el-Shater – who is already in custody – are appearing before a court later this month for their alleged role in the deaths of eight protesters who were demonstrating outside the Brotherhood’s Cairo headquarters in June.
