Middle EastEgypt authorities close HQ of Muslim Brotherhood’s newspaper

CAIRO: The authorities in Egypt have closed the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice newspaper in Cairo, two days after an administrative court imposed a ban on the Islamist group from carrying out all the activities in the country and ordered the seizure of its funds, assets and headquarters.

“We the journalists of the Freedom and Justice newspaper condemn the security forces for closing down the headquarters of the newspaper,” the Brotherhood said in a statement on Wednesday.

The security forces raided the building overnight and confiscated all the contents, an official in Cairo’s security department told media on condition of anonymity.

The raid followed Monday’s court ruling which banned the Brotherhood and ordered its funds seized, he added.

Several Muslim Brotherhood leaders have been arrested by the army-backed interim government as part of its crackdown against the Islamist group since President Mohamed Morsi was ousted from power on July 3.
