ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) Islamabad Dr. Javed Ashraf on Friday said that his institution was making all out efforts to curb drug mafia in the university but agreed that he could not succeed completely till now in this regard.

While addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said that the university was investigating about the involvement of university officials in selling of the drugs to the students.

The VC QAU lauded the government for providing all out support to curb the menace adding that soon they would succeed.

Dr. Javed Ashraf said that the university is spread over 1700 acres of land but did not have the boundary wall which was major security risk to the students. He said that the number of security guards was not enough to control any untoward incident as only 200 security guards were performing duties in the university jurisdiction day and night. He suggested that the security presence needed to be increased.

The Vice Chancellor said that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had allocated Rs 55 million for the construction of boundary wall, adding that Secretary to President of Pakistan promised allocation of funds for the purpose.

“It was major development that Supreme Court has taken action on the land encroachment issue of the varsity,” the VC said.

“We have approached the high ups on the illegal land grabbing issue, he said and added, “We are making efforts to get varsity’s land vacated.”

The VC QAU further said that the university ranking was the highest in its history despite limited resources which was the result of hard work of the faculty members. He said that the international institutions were also acknowledging the performance of the research methodology in the university.

Dr Javed also called for enhancement of security situation in the university as it was not possible only through security guards.

The VC said that the minor incidents of fights in the university were a routine matter in the educational institutions, adding that QAU was mini Pakistan therefore the students would have to create the atmosphere of unity.

In reply to a question he said that the varsity funds have been deposited in the foreign bank to get high profit adding, “In this way we have gotten profit of Rs 6 million.”
