EducationPosting of female teachers at Punjab Boys Schools spark protest

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The process of posting female teachers at various Boys High Schools across Punjab has begun, prompting a protest as female teachers declared it an “unislamic” initiative.

About 30 to 40 percent newly appointed young female teachers, having acquired Master degrees, have been posted in Boys High Schools for teaching Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and English subjects.

While next month, further newly appointed female teachers will be posted in Boys High and Higher Secondary Schools. Prior to it, female teachers had already been posted in Boys Primary and Middle Schools; however, now their postings have begun being carried out in High Schools as well.

In the meantime, several newly appointed female teachers have left their jobs over postings in Boys Schools.

The Teachers Organizations have also voiced their serious concerns and condemned such initiative. They have demanded the Punjab government to post female teachers in Girls Schools only.

Those teachers, who were appointed a few months ago, consisted of 60 percent female teachers and 40 percent male teachers whereas in new appointments, scheduled in December 2017, against 60 percent of teachers will be females.

Meanwhile, female teachers have declared their postings in Boys Schools as “unislamic”.

The leaders of United Teachers Council said that the government seems to have decided to bring in co-education system in all education institutions in the future, and ongoing postings of female teachers in Boys Schools are part of that plan.
