PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The Elementary and Secondary Education Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Vision 21 Foundation inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for partnership to establish and run second shift speed literacy centres (SLC) in five government primary schools in Peshawar.

The Managing Director Elementary Education Foundation Allah Nawaz Soomro and Director of Vision21 Foundation Dr. Khalid Irshad signed the MOU.

After the signing ceremony both party affirmed to extend the initiative and joined hands in efforts for providing quality education and enrolling maximum number of students.

Speaking on the occasion, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Education and Power Muhammad Atif Khan has said promotion of quality education was the top most priority of the government and help in this sector from any quarter would be warmly welcomed.

He added uplift of nations was only possible through promotion of education and that is why our focus was on promotion of this important sector. Additional Secretary Education Qaiser Alam was also present on this occasion.

According to the MOU details, Vision21 will initiate and manage the SLCs in the afternoon shifts in the adopted schools for both girls and boys. The programme will be completely free of cost for the students. Vision21 will also pay for teachers and other staff and follow the curriculum and text books authorized by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after achieving the target literacy levels.

Under the agreement Vision21 will have a student-teacher ratio of 20:1 for SLCs and will also organize training for teachers.

Speed Literacy programme is a uniquely designed literacy curriculum with an explicit aim to tackle illiteracy by teaching the illiterate children how to read and write Urdu and English and educate to primary levels in one year.

With this unique programme, children can get out of the illiteracy trap and get back into education. The programme has been successfully implemented in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Bannu benefiting above 700 children in a short period of time.

The Education Minister maintained it was our endeavor that all knowledge-loving organizations come forward and help us in our mission of equipping each and every child with ornament of education so as to eradicate illiteracy.
