ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Wednesday organized the 2nd National Symposium on Thematic Research in Social Sciences, wherein scholars showcased their research in various fields.

Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman HEC and vice chancellors of different universities, faculty members, researchers and students attended the day-long symposium.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman HEC urged the participants to identify weak areas in Social Sciences which could be focused for result-oriented research.

“Social Sciences is a very important area, but at the same time it is a missing link in our education system,” he said, adding that “it is our academic responsibility to strengthen our nation socially.”

He said that strengthening of social sciences is necessary to keep the society integrated.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad announced establishment of the Social Sciences Council of Pakistan, a conceptually independent body comprising professionals for further development of research culture in all disciplines of Social Sciences.

He said that HEC will release separate funding for the Council and will cater to its needs.

The Chairman said the HEC has been according due importance to all the three aspects of Social Sciences i.e., academic, research and social outreach, and several remarkable steps have been taken in this regard.

He said that Pakistan has gained the membership of Asian Social Sciences Association (ASSA) and efforts are afoot to hold the Association’s meeting in Pakistan.

He said that HEC places 30 percent of slots in its all scholarships programmes for the students of Social Sciences, adding that it has already doubled the budget for Social Sciences.

He promised that the existing budget for Social Sciences will further be enhanced in the next year.

He lamented that as compared to economic and technological development, social progress is taken for granted. He emphasized the need for setting up schools for research in Social Sciences so as to promote post-graduate researches in the field.

Referring to the mushroom growth of illegal universities as well as campuses, he said that HEC is against the use of higher education for commercial purposes.

He urged the universities to pay special attention to improvement of governance and quality of education.

In his keynote address, Dr. Kaisar Bengali, Adviser to the Government of Balochistan, stressed the need for conducting research on prevailing social problems of the country.

Emphasizing relevance of researches to the social needs while pointing out problems like poverty, injustice and unemployment, he said that the structural imbalance of economy creates panic and needs to be addressed.

He said that Pakistan does not lack resources, however the equitable distribution of resources is a need of the hour for national development.

Dr. Bengali urged the students to rise up and come up through productive research on critical issues of the society and areas linked to the social uplift.

He underscored that democracy has been strengthened in the country and the State has decided to eliminate the militant culture.

Dr. Shahid Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor, Allama Iqbal Open University, said that improvement of economy and maturity of politics are interlinked.

He said that improvement of both the economic and political situation of the country is necessary for the national growth.

He urged the scholars to select fresh and reformatory topics for their research so that it could cast a positive impact on the society.

The scholars who conducted their research in various areas of Social Sciences under HEC’s Thematic Research Grant Programme and shared their findings with the Symposium participants included Dr. Tahir Amin, Vice Chancellor Bahauddin Zakariya University, Dr. Rasul Bakhsh Rais, Professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences, Dr. Najma Najam, Dr. Pervaiz Ahmed Memon, Sukkur Institute of Business Administration, Dr. Fauzia Maqsood, University of Gujrat, Dr. Sami Ullah, University of Gujrat, Dr. Asma Manzoor University of Karachi, and Dr. Ijaz Hussain, Beaconhouse National University.

In her concluding remarks, Dr. Samina Amin Qadir, Vice Chancellor, Fatima Jinnah Women University, appreciated the efforts of HEC for paying due attention to Social Sciences. She shed light on topics of different researches showcased on the occasion and admired the social scientists for their endeavours.

Fida Hussain, Director General Academics HEC, said that the recommendations of the Symposium will be shared with universities across the country so that the new researchers could benefit from them.

He said that the Social Sciences Section of HEC Academics has been putting up strenuous efforts from promotion of Social Sciences in the country for the last 10 years, adding that the next symposium on Social Sciences will be held by the end of this year.

Programs like these are crucial in fostering people-to-people connections between our two nations.” The students were also introduced to the CPEC framework through a presentation and video by young diplomats, illustrating the initiative’s impact on regional connectivity and economic growth. On the second day, the delegation visited the China Media Group office in Islamabad, where they explored initiatives aimed at fostering media collaboration and promoting cultural understanding between Pakistan and China. This was followed by a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the delegation was warmly welcomed by Ms. Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During an in-depth briefing, Ms. Baloch shared valuable insights into Pakistan's foreign policy priorities, particularly its strategic engagements with key regions, including China, the USA, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa. She emphasized that Pakistan’s relationship with China remains the cornerstone of its foreign policy, rooted in mutual trust and shared interests. The delegation also had the honor of meeting Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Ishaq Dar. Additionally, they participated in a dialogue with the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan (CCCPK), where representatives of Chinese enterprises discussed ongoing projects and investment strategies. Mustafa Hyder Sayed, Executive Director of the Pakistan-China Institute, remarked, “This program exemplifies how diplomacy and development converge. In her address, she stated, “Misinformation about Balochistan undermines the progress being made. It is imperative to showcase the tangible benefits that Chinese collaboration has brought to the region.” Another significant session was led by Zou Yaodong, Chief Staff of the Administration Department of the China Overseas Port Holding Company (COPHC). He provided a detailed overview of Gwadar’s development under COPHC’s leadership, highlighting its strategic significance in the CPEC framework. “Gwadar is a symbol of hope and prosperity for Balochistan and Pakistan. COPHC is committed to making it a hub of regional connectivity and economic transformation,”he said. The cultural aspect of the program included visits to iconic sites in Islamabad, such as the Pakistan Monument, Lok Virsa Museum, and Margalla Hills. These excursions deepened the students’ connection to Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, complementing the program’s educational focus. The 4th Batch of the Balochistan Youth Engagement Program continues to exemplify the Pakistan-China Institute’s dedication to nurturing future leaders and fostering regional connectivity.
