PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Professor Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Tuesday said that all universities in the country would be converted into smart universities by providing them unlimited internet facilities.

Inaugurating Psychology Research Center in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University (SBBWU) here, he said that the research center had been established with the support of Southern Methodist University.

The centre is equipped with latest equipment and books which would be highly resourceful to the research scholars of province.

On this occasion, HEC Chairman also distributed laptops among 71 students of Undergraduate and Graduate level under third distribution of 2nd phase of Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme.

Cheques were also awarded to 72 students of different departments under HEC Need based Scholarship Program.

Addressing to the program participants Prof. Dr. Mukhtar, shared that 48 percent females and 52 percent males working in various departments of HEC, hoping that this ratio would be increased in coming years.

He said that focus had been given to research and providing all the possible facilities to the universities.

Quaid e Azam University was the top research university in the country and 12,000 research papers were added in the pool of knowledge which was a major contribution and pride for Pakistan, he added.

The Chairman said that HEC was planning to convert all the varsities into “Smart Universities” by proving unlimited internet facility to the varsities.

Professor Dr. Mukhtar also presented Rs 10 million cheque to SBBWU Peshawar Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana for strengthening sports equipments and infrastructure and give approval of construction of 2 Hostel Buildings and academic block in university main campus.

On the occasion, Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana claimed that within 2.5 years of her tenure, with the help of the young staff and faculty members, the university has managed to create an environment where parents have agreed to send their daughters for acquiring higher education and this has been observed by the increased enrollment rate of the students in the university.

Dr. Sultana also requested the Chairman HEC to provide complete access to the HEC Digital Library as the university has initiated PhD program in different departments therefore the research scholars need to access advanced data bases for which cooperation of HEC plays a vital role.
