ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has demanded 90-day period to make arrangements for holding Local Bodies (LB) polls in the country.

Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan have also supported this demanded while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is ready for polls in September but the Supreme Court has strictly ordered to give final date till July 22.

The ECP argued before three-member bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chauhdry that local bodies’ elections are a bigger task than general polls and it is not possible to hold those before 90 days.

Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan also gave 90 days’ time but the KPK regime assured of holding polls in September.

The Chief Justice said in his remarks that, the Constitution had been violated during last five years by not holding local bodies’ polls but no more time will be granted than September.

The ECP has mailed letters to all four provinces, saying to make similar laws and adopt same way for holding Local Bodies’ polls, informed sources.
