Monitoring Desk: The Foreign Affairs Council of European Union (EU) will discuss shooting down of Flight MH17 during its July 22 (tomorrow) meeting to be held in Brussels.

The situation will be assessed at meeting that was not scheduled for MH17 and its provisional agenda was released on July 17—the day Flight MH17 crashed over Eastern Ukraine where separatists and Ukrainian government is fighting intensely.

Options including  to impose further sanctions on Russia will be discussed. Eurasian experts believe that “use of NATO forces to protect Ukraine from Russian aggression can also be a part of meeting. “

The Council, chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, will discuss developments in the Ukrainian crisis in reference to shooting down/crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Torez town of Donetsk area. In addition, the Council is set to formally establish an EU mission under the Common Security and Defence Policy to assist the reform of the Ukrainian civilian security sector.

The Council will also take stock of the situation in Iraq. Already in June, the Council had voiced deep concern about the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Iraq, strongly condemning the attacks perpetrated by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The Council is due to discuss the state of play in the Middle East peace process and could adopt conclusions.
