WEST, Texas: A massive explosion occurred in a fertilizer factory at Waco in the state of Texas on Wednesday night that left dozens dead and hundreds of people injured. Moreover, blast damaged or destroyed numerous buildings including a school and nursing home, authorities said.

The explosion took place at about 8 pm CDT (0100 GMT on Thursday) in West, a town of some 2,700 people about 80 miles (130 km) south of Dallas and 20 miles (32 km) north of Waco.

Texas governor Rick Perry said in a statement “We are monitoring developments and gathering information as details continue to emerge about this incident.”

“We have also mobilized state resources to help local authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of West, and the first responders on the scene,” Perry said.
